Baltimore Business Journal - by Ryan Sharrow

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation said Wednesday it has awarded nearly $1.8 million to nonprofits throughout Maryland in the first 60 days of its new grants program.

The Weinberg Foundation established the Maryland Small Grants Program in December to support poor and vulnerable residents in the state.

Some of the largest grants of $100,000 awarded to Baltimore nonprofits were received by Baptist Family and Children's Services, Housing Unlimited Inc., Jobs Housing Recovery, Maryland Mentoring Partnership, and Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland.

The small grants program provides a maximum of $50,000 per year for up to two years. The grant application process takes 50 days from start to finish, less than the typical grant process, officials said.

The foundation said the small grants program has received 116 applications totaling around $10 million in funding requests.

The Weinberg Foundation is the second largest charitable foundation in the Baltimore area, with $2.2 billion in total assets, and distributes around $110 million in annual gifts, accord ing to Baltimore Business Journal research.
