Goals for General Community Support
A successful program depends, in part, on an organization's ability to foster meaningful opportunities and support. Consistent with The Weinberg Foundation's mission to provide direct services to meet an individual's basic needs, The Foundation is mindful to support innovative programs throughout the United States and globally. The programs identified are supporting organizations that meet the basic needs of individuals, families, and communities.
Special consideration will be given to programs that fall into the following categories:
- Community Development grants;
- Supporting the renovation or construction of affordable housing;
- Neighborhood revitalization;
- Community improvement projects in low-income neighborhoods; and
- Jewish Issues grants, which have a Jewish theme but may not have a direct link to poverty, rather they may focus on Jewish continuity and renewal.
The Foundation approved many grants during the past year to improve neighborhoods for low-income individuals and families resulting in increased home values and stable neighborhoods. The Foundation's support provides financial assistance to families who are at greater risk for financial instability and diminished living conditions through various loan and grant programs. The Foundation also supports for emergency funding for families and individuals to avoid eviction, resulting in possible homelessness.
Globally, the Weinberg Foundation provided support to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) under the General Community Support allocation category. The Weinberg Foundation's partnership complements the JDC's mission to serve the needs of Jews throughout the world, particularly where their lives as Jews are threatened or made more difficult. In Israel, The Foundation's support is providing services to victims of the ongoing air strikes. In Argentina, The Foundation's support is helping the Jewish community rebuild after the country's economic collapse. In India, The Foundation's operational support at a JCC is to ensure Jewish continuity. In the Former Soviet Union (FSU), The Foundation continues to support Jewish renewal programs in addition to subsidizing operating funds to several JCC's.
The General Community Support portfolio is addressing the basic human needs while achieving direct and demonstrable results.
